About Kasun Chanuka Fernando

Kasun Chanuka Fernando

I'm Kasun Chanuka Fernando, a self-taught front-end developer and technical writer from Colombo, Sri Lanka. Online I go by kasuncfdo.

I build websites and interfaces, I write about tech, and I help grow a community for developers in Sri Lanka.

One day I want to call myself a design engineer: someone who designs and builds, and cares about the small details in both. I'm not there yet, so for now I'm learning by shipping, one project at a time.

Where it started

It started in 2021 with a sheet of paper. I was doing my O/Ls at De La Salle College, Colombo, when my IT teacher drew a home page structure with a pen and asked me to build a website for the college.

All I knew then was Blogger. I tried to make it work there for weeks and kept hitting its limits, so I went to YouTube and learned HTML, then CSS. I searched almost the whole internet for college websites to get ideas, and that habit of finding inspiration before I start is one I still have.

I found a basic college template on GitHub and spent about three months reshaping it, often nine hours a day and late into the night, until it had a new home page and more than 12 pages. A contact form pushed me to learn JavaScript. I shipped the first version on GitHub Pages in 2021, and with help from Antonio Rennvick Annoson, an old boy of the college, it went live at delasalle.lk in 2022.

In February 2023 that site won a TopWeb.LK award from LK Domain Registry. I never expected a certificate for the small website I made as a kid, but it happened.

I wrote the whole story in My Journey From Self-Taught Beginner to Web Developer (LinkedIn, April 2024).

Recognition

Websites I designed and built that won TopWeb.LK monthly awards, run by LK Domain Registry.

What I do now

  • I build

I'm an associate web developer at Ceylon Cash and CeyPay. Outside work I build websites and Ghost themes for clients like Citizen.lk, Jones Gems and Aiko Childcare, mostly with Astro, Next.js, React, Tailwind CSS and Ghost.

  • I write

Tech stories for TechNews.LK since 2021, in Sinhala, about AI, Web3 and what's happening in Sri Lanka's tech scene. 31 articles so far.

  • I bring people together

I co-founded Devs.lk, a community where developers in Sri Lanka can find resources, learn and share what they know.

A few places along the way

What I believe

  1. 01

It starts with a spark. Curiosity and passion count for more than knowing everything up front. I didn't know what web development was when I started.

  2. 02

Inspiration is everywhere. Look at what other people made, learn from it, then make it your own. I still go looking for references before every project.

  3. 03

Keep trying. Most of what I know came from refusing to give up on that first website.

  4. 04

Stay open to new tools. Blogger, HTML, PHP, WordPress, Ghost, Astro. Each one taught me something the last one couldn't.

  5. 05

Details are the work. Spacing, type and motion are what make an interface feel right, so that's where I spend my time.
